Flight ban to Somalia’s Kismayo affects social & health services in region
The flights ban on the southern Somalia city of Kismayo has affected the social services sector in the region.
The ban mainly hit vulnerable people who travel from Dobley, Afmadow, and other parts of the region to Kismayo for medical treatment.
In addition, patients who usually travel to the capital, Mogadishu, for treatment were affected. According to reports, an estimated 10 patients travel to Mogadishu every day to seek medical treatment.
The ban has also reportedly affected the free healthcare services at Kismayo General Hospital, which is almost running short of medicines.
The hospital’s director said that the hospital has been receiving new cases of pregnant women with symptoms such as severe bleeding and need emergency help.
Hundreds of people who have been visiting Kismayo and others who have travelled to Mogadishu are reported to have delayed their trips due to the ban.
On 23rd September, the federal government blocked former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed from travelling to Kismayo to take part in the inauguration of Jubbaland state president, Ahmed Madobe.
